Demorest, GA -- For the second time this season the Piedmont College men's basketball team dropped a Great South Athletic Conference game, this evening at the hands of visiting LaGrange College by the score of 86-80 in overtime. The Lions rallied from four points down in the final 30 seconds to send the game into overtime but saw the Panthers connect on 15 of the 24 points to take the contest.
LaGrange opened the game with the first six points of the game and held the Lions scoreless for the initial five minutes. The home team stormed back to take the lead 14-13 with nine minutes remaining. Piedmont clung to a 25-21 margin but the Panthers answered in the final three minutes with a 10-3 run to take a three-point advantage into the locker room.
The visitors stretched the lead to a game high 10 with 15 minutes remaining but saw the Lions roar back with a 12-3 run on three tri-fectas. The Panthers, who never trailed in the final nine minutes, led 70-66 with 16 seconds remaining. After
Josh Haymore knocked down an three-pointer the Lions trailed by one with eight seconds left.
After the visitors hit one of two at the charity stripe senior
Sam Coppage was fouled with .2 seconds remaining and went to the line trailing by two. The guard calmly drained the two free-throws to send the game into overtime.
LaGrange opened the extra frame with an 11-4 run over the first three and a half minutes. The Panthers sealed the win going 4-8 from the free-throw line while the Lions could only find one of their final five shots from the floor.
Senior #J.C. Herebia
led the squad with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds while Michael Rubio# added 16 points including three tri-fectas. Coppage and
Josh Haymore added 12 points respectively.
PC, now 15-8 overall and 3-2 in the GSAC, will return to action again on Wednesday, February 17th as they host in-state rival Oglethorpe University at Cave Arena with tip-off slated for 7:00.
