Demorest, GA -- In the 2009-10 home opener this evening at Cave Arena the Piedmont College men's basketball team overpowered visiting Covenant College by the score of 106-57. The Lions shot an impressive 15-26 (58%) from behind the arc and forced 21 turnovers en route to the first victory of the season.
With six minutes remaining in the first half the Lions led 22-16 before going on 15-6 run over the next three minutes highlighted by three tri-fectas. After an old-fashioned three point play from the Scots, the home team ended the frame on an 11-2 spurt.
With only 3.8 seconds left
Josh Haymore took the inbound pass and dribbled beyond the time line and drained the three-pointer just ahead of the buzzer to cap the run.
In the second frame the Lions connected on 21 shots from the floor including 7-10 (70%) from behind the three-point line. Piedmont notched 18 points off turnovers and held the advantage in the paint 20-10.
Senior
Michael Rubio led five teammates in double figures with a game-best 22 points.
Mike Chatman chipped in with 18 points and a squad high seven rebounds while newcomer
Tyler Arnold added 15 points and three steals off the bench.
The victory improves PC to an even 1-1 overall on the young season. The men will return to the hardwood again on Saturday, November 28th as they travel to USA-South member Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC with tip off slated for 2:00.
