PRATTVILLE, Ala. - No., 13 Piedmont men's golf roared back with a strong second round to vault into solo sixth place after day one of the Capital City Classic was completed Monday afternoon in Prattville, Alabama.
After struggling with a 12-over team score in the first round in the morning, the Lions responded with an under par team score in the afternoon, moving up to the heels of the top five on the leaderboard.
Overall, three Lions fired par-or-better rounds in the second round, led by
Doug Gugel's 2-under 70. Following a solid opening round of 1-over 73, Gugel made five birdies in his second round to post his fifth par-or-better round of the spring.
However, he was not the only Lion to bounce back in the afternoon.
Adam Rogers bettered his first round score by six, posting a 1-under 71 that included four birdies and nothing worse than bogey on his card to move up 35 spots on the individual leaderboard.
Freshman
Braden Kiley's even par 72 in the second round was highlighted by an eagle 3 at the par-5 5th hole, his final one of the day in the shotgun start format. In addition to his eagle, Kiley carded three more birdies to post the team's third round at par or better.
Jacob DeJesus had the team's final counting score in the second round, a 2-over 74.
Overall, all five Lions improved upon their first round score in the second round.
Piedmont sits just five strokes out of fourth place on the team leaderboard with 18 holes to play. Gugel has his eyes on a top five finish and is just three shots out of a tie for second.
At this time, tee time information for the final round is not yet available.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Gugel's second of 2-under 70 gives him three of his last four rounds at par or better.
