PINEHURST, N.C. - Adam Rogers fired back-to-back under par rounds to lead the No. 16 Piedmont Men's Golf team in the first two rounds of the Tiger Invitational on Monday.

Playing Forest Creek North in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Rogers was undaunted, opening with a 2-under 70 before bettering it by a stroke in the afternoon, with a bogey free 3-under 69. He now sits just two shots out of the individual lead with 18 holes to play in the event. 

Over the 36 holes on Monday, Rogers made seven birdies against just two bogeys, with both of those coming in his opening round 70.

 


His strong play helped push the Lions into a tie for sixth on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 1-over and 2-over on the day.

The first round saw the Lions post three rounds at par-or-better. In addition to Rogers, who led the way iin the morning, junior Jacob DeJesus fired a 1-under 71, his low round of the spring. Fellow junior Doug Gugel raced out to a fast start on his way to an even par 72.

 


Piedmont's final counting score in the opening round came from reigning CCS Rookie of the Week Braden Kiley, who made four birdies on his way to a 4-over 76.

Rogers led the way once again in the afternoon, setting the tone with his bogey free round while Gugel was rock solid again, posting another even par round of 72. Gugel made an eagle 3 on the par-5 18th hole to highlight his second round.

Freshman Bradley Knowles stepped up in a big way, improving on his first round score by five strokes on his way to a 1-over 73.

Rounding out the group, DeJesus and Kiley carded rounds of 5-over 77. 

Methodist leads on the team side, sitting at 9-under through 36 holes. Rogers is in a four-way tie for second on the individual leaderboard, two behind Emory's Kevin Mu.

The final 18 holes will begin tomorrow morning.
