Men's Golf Goes Low Again to Bank Top 10 at Golfweek October Classic

SANDESTIN, Fla.. - Piedmont men's golf continued its climb up the leaderboard with an outstanding final round at the Golfweek October Classic in Sandestin, Florida Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions fired a 5-under 279 as a team, thanks to three par-or-better rounds, including two rounds in the 60's.

After a challenging opening round on Sunday, Doug Gugel continued his bounce back with a career-best tying round of 67. The junior from Winter Springs, Florida made six birdies on his round and punctuated the tournament with a birdie on his final hole, the par-4 9th.

Senior Adam Rogers also improved his score over each of the three rounds, finishing with a 3-under 68, including a pair of birdies on two of his last three holes, the par-5 7th and the par-4 9th. Rogers was able to grab a t-9th finish and was one of 11 golfers in the 120 person field to finish the 54 holes under par.

For the second consecutive round, Jacob DeJesus delivered a solid even par round of 71. DeJesus got off to a blistering start, with four birdies on his opening nine to go out in 2-under 34.

Piedmont's final counting score came from Remo Scholl, who carded a 2-over 73, making back-to-back birdies on his 16th and 17th holes of the day to aid in Piedmont's sprint to the finish.

Finally, freshman Braden Kiley fired a sold 3-over 74 in the final round, also making four birdies. The freshman made birdie on three of the four par-3's on the course.

The second consecutive under par team score helped the Lions move into a solo 9th place finish, placing one stroke ahead of 10th place LeTourneau.

Mary Hardin-Baylor took the team title at 5-under for the event.

Up next, the Lions will conclude their fall season, heading back to North Carolina for the O'Brient Jensen, beginning Monday, Oct. 27.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Rogers now has at least one par-or-better round in each of the three tournaments this fall. He also now has five total par-or-better rounds for the fall.
- Gugel is tied with Rogers for the team lead with two rounds in the 60's this fall.
- As a team, the Lions totaled 21 birdies for the final round.
