Men's Golf in Third After Solid Start at Wynlakes Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Piedmont men's golf enjoyed a solid start to the Wynlakes Intercollegiate, firing a pair of even par rounds on Monday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.

It was a senior and a freshman getting it done for Piedmont, as Josh Hebrink and Doug Gugel each sit in a tie for ninth place after carding even par 72's in the first round.

As a team, the Lions delivered a 295 (+7) team score and are in a tie for third place, trailing only tournament host Huntingdon and Hampden-Sydney.

Playing in a group of five together, the Lions began their day on hole No. 10. After making three consecutive bogeys on his first nine, Hebrink caught fire coming home, shooting a 2-under 34 on his inward nine that included four birdies and five overall.

The freshman Gugel was steady all day long, making 16 pars to go with a single bogey and a birdie on his final hole of the day to stay right with Hebrink at the top of the squad.

Senior Eric Penland matched Hebrink with a team-high five birdies on his way to a 3-over 75. Penland made birdie on his final two holes of the day to close strong.

Adam Rogers and Connor Lane each carded 4-over 76's to give Piedmont a solid day across the board. Rogers also made 16 pars but had a triple bogey and a bogey on the other two holes while Lane made a pair of birdies on his round.

Huntingdon holds an eight-shot lead over Hampden-Sydney and a 16-stroke advantage over the Lions.

Hampden-Sydney's Nick Rubino along with Huntingdon's Jack Burr each fired 5-under 67's to tie at the top of the individual leaderboard.

Up next, the event will conclude on Tuesday with a shotgun start.
