BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The Piedmont men's golf team finds itself in seventh place out of 18 teams after Round One of the NCAA DIII Preview was completed late Monday afternoon in Boulder City, Nevada.
With a late afternoon start on the west coast, the Lions got off to a hot start and held on late to fire a team score of 20-over par. With high winds, the course played difficult for all competitors, as Piedmont is just 12 strokes back of Sewanee, which leads at 8-over. The Lions trail No. 1 Methodist by just seven shots and lead No. 2 Emory by five.
Piedmont was consistent across the board, holding steady with four counting rounds in the 70's for the day.
Overall, the Lions carded 17 birdies among the five competitors with a pair of eagles as well, Each Lion made at least three birdies on the day, led by four each from
Eric Penland and
Cam Lucas. Penland also made an eagle, while all four of his birdies came on his front nine on his way to a 5-over 77.
Leading Piedmont for the day was
Adam Rogers, who also made an eagle to go with three birdies and a 4-over 76.
Defending NCAA Individual Champion
Josh Hebrink is also coming off a second-place finish in this event last year and the senior started his event one behind Penland with a 6-over 78.
Freshman
Tom Yao continued the strong start to his career, making three birdies and carding a 5-over 77 to join Penland.
The 54-hole tournament will continue on Monday with 18 holes, setting up for the final round on Tuesday.

"It was a tough day. There was a high wind advisory. I've never seen anything like it. "I'm so proud of all of our guys. We could have quite, but we hung in there. This thing is only 11 shots away. In two days anything can happen."
"We have the talent and the guys to go out there and do something special. We just have to keep the ball in the right position and we will finish these rounds like know how."
