SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 17 Piedmont men's golf team enjoyed a solid day to open its spring season at the Savannah Invitational at the Savannah Country Club.
The Lions completed its first two rounds, but a number of teams had a few holes left in their second round before darkness halted play.
Piedmont opened with a 10-over 294 to put itself in eighth after the first round but improved with a 5-over 289 in the second round, led by
JOSH HEBRINK's 2-under 69.
Hebrink now has fired five consecutive rounds at par or better, dating back to the fall, carding an even par 71 in the first round before his career-best 69 in the second. The Elk River, Minnesota native is in the hunt, just two shots off the lead with 18 holes to play.
Â
In opening with an even par 71, it marked Hebrink's fourth consecutive even par round after three straight 71's at the DIII Golfweek Invitational. It was a typical rock solid round with three birdies and three bogeys on his card.
In their first round of the fall, the Lions counted four rounds in the 70's, with
ERIC PENLAND right behind Hebrink at a 2-over 73 while
FRED ROBERTS IV delivered a 3-over 74. Playing his first competitive round at Piedmont, transfer
BEN HUBER fired a 5-over 76, rallying back after being 4-over through his first four holes.
The second round was where the Lions made their move, led by Hebrink's 2-under 69 that included six birdies along with an eagle to put himself in position for his first individual title.
Roberts IV also made an eagle while adding three birdies of his own for a 1-under 70, giving Piedmont two under par rounds in round two. Huber added his second straight 4-over 75 while
MARIO PEREZCASSAR III improved to a 4-over 75 as well, with Penland falling back to a 78 in the second round.
Â
Although they currently sit in fifth, the Lions are just five shots behind second-place Methodist, which is at 10-over.
The event will conclude with the final 18 holes, beginning tomorrow morning.
