MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. - Led by
FRED ROBERTS IV's 2-under 69, the Piedmont men's golf team delivered a strong second round performance on Monday at the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational at the Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Florida.
Roberts IV caught fire on the second nine, finishing his round with four consecutive birdies to move into a tie for fifth on the individual leaderboard.
Â
As a team, the Lions improved upon their first round score by 11 strokes, firing a 2-over 286 as they received consistent play across the board, posting an even par round (
JOSH HEBRINK) and two 73's (
MICHAEL CLARDY and
ERIC PENLAND) in support of Roberts IV's 2-under showing.
After firing an even par 35 on the opening nine, Roberts IV hit his second shot in the water on the par 5 11th and made a double bogey 7. While he then missed the green on the par 3 12th, he made a clutch par save before making another long par putt on the 13th. That sparked the momentum as he birdied the short par 4 15th, then followed it with birdies at 16, 17 and 18 to help the Lions jump up the leaderboard.
For the second straight day, Hebrink was rock solid, delivering yet another even par 72 that included three birdies and three bogeys.
Â
One day after firing a 5-over 76, Penland birdied two of his last four holes to deliver a 2-over 73.Â
Â
The steady senior Clardy also joined the fray on the back nine, making birdie on his last two holes to also deliver a 73.
Â
Junior
CONNOR HIXSON improved from his first round score by five shots, carding a 5-over 76.
Emory still leads on the team side by five strokes over Methodist as both teams delivered 7-under 277's for the day. However, the Lions find themselves just four strokes away from third-place Hampden-Sydney, which sits at 11-over for the event.
Methodist's Henry Angier leads the individual leaderboard at 5-under after a second round 7-under 64.
Up next, the 54-hole event will conclude Tuesday as Piedmont will tee off beginning at 9:15 (EDT). The order of play will be Hixson, Clardy, Penland, Hebrink and Roberts IV.
