Softball Earns Sunday Split to Close out Raleigh Grand Slam Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – The Piedmont College softball team split its final two games of the Raleigh Grand Slam Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Lions (4-4) opened the day with a dominating 7-0 win over Randolph before losing a 4-3 heartbreaker, surrendering three runs in the seventh inning against Lynchburg.

Game 1: Piedmont 7, Randolph 0
Piedmont starter MARTINA MALOCH delivered her first career complete game shutout, dominating the Wildcats as the Lady Lions started the day off with a win.

The Lady Lions struck early with three runs in the first highlighted by a HANNAH MORGAN RBI single.

PC tacked on an additional run on an RBI single by MADISON GARRETT in the fourth.

KATELYN PERRY and MICAELA QUESADA continued their hot hitting, delivering a pair of hits each as it was plenty enough to hold up for Maloch, who was able to strand the bases loaded in the seventh to secure the victory.

Game 2: Lynchburg 4, Piedmont 3
After the Hornets struck for a single run in the top of the second against PC starter ABBEY ARRINGTON, the sophomore right-hander settled in and delivered a strong performance.

Piedmont still trailed into the fifth inning, but MACKENZIE DAVIS turned the tide with a 2 RBI double to right center that brought home TK SAULS and MADISON GARRETT to give PC the 2-1 lead.

The Lady Lions were not done as REBEKAH STEGMAYER gave the Lady Lions an insurance run by scampering home on a wild pitch.

Arrington cruised into the seventh but ran into trouble with a two-run lead as Lynchburg's leadoff hitter reached on an error.
After the next hitter reached, the Hornets followed with a 2 RBI double to tie the score before they scored the eventual go-ahead run on an RBI groundout.

Needing a run to extend the game, Piedmont was set down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to take the loss.
