Late Inning Rally by Ferrum Downs Piedmont Baseball 9-8

Ferrum, VA - The Piedmont College baseball team dropped the series opener to Ferrum College 9-8 after a late innings rally by the Panthers. The Lions led 8-6 heading into the seventh inning stretch but the Panthers scored two in the bottom of the seventh and the game-winner in the eighth to take the contest. 

Piedmont trailed early as the Panthers took a 4-0 lead including two home runs in the first and third innings. The Lions began to chip away at the lead in the fourth inning scoring three runs on five hits including a double steal as COLLIN GRANT stole second allowing JONATHEN BURKETT to steal home.

It was 4-3 Ferrum leading after four complete but the Panthers added another pair of runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 6-3. Piedmont clawed back to knot it up at six in the sixth inning as JUSTIN GROOVER hit his first career homerun with the Lions, a 2-RBI shot to left field. 

Piedmont took its first lead in the seventh inning with two runs on a Groover single to right field as he added another two RBI to give him five in the game. The lead was short-lived as Ferrum fought back to push across two runs in the bottom of the frame and even it once again. The game winner came in the bottom of the eighth as a sac fly scored a run after a walk and an error to lead off the inning. 

Turning Point
--The Lions led 8-6 but allowed two runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to lift the Panthers to the series opening victory. 

Standout Performances
--JUSTIN GROOVER was 3-for-5 with a run scored and five RBI and had a two-run homerun. 
--The Ferrum pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts in the contest. 

Inside the Box Score
--There were three home runs in the contest, one for Piedmont and two for Ferrum. 

News & Notes
--The Lions had six stolen bases in the contest including ZACH LANGLEY accounting for three. 

Up Next
--The Lions remain in action against Ferrum with a doubleheader on the slate for Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
