Ferrum, VA - The Piedmont College baseball team was swept Saturday in a doubleheader against Ferrum College losing the series 3-0 to the Panthers in Virginia. The Lions dropped the first contest 8-2 before coming back strong with a 5-0 lead in the second game, but the Panthers rallied for an 8-6 win.
Piedmont struggled to get the bats going in game one with both runs coming in the fifth inning after recording four hits to that point. The Panthers jumped out in front in the third inning with six runs on six hits including a 3-run homer by freshman Kyle Anstice.
SAM CARPENTER took the loss in game one, his first of his career, pitching the first three innings.
RYAN STEWART entered in relief going 4.2 innings allowing just one earned run while it was
BRYAN WHITACRE who recorded the final out getting a strikeout.
Game two was off to a promising start after Piedmont went ahead 5-0 after the first half inning with five hits and one error in the frame, but the Panthers answered back tacking on three runs of their own making it 5-3 after the first inning.
Ferrum took the lead 6-5 in the bottom of the second, but PC tied it up at six in the third on a
CALEB NORTON single to center field. Again, the Panthers quickly responded as a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the third put Ferrum up again and the Panthers held on to defeat PC in game two 8-6.
Turning Point
--A six-run third inning set the Panthers up for success in game one including a 3-run homerun.
--A solo shot in the third inning of game two for Ferrum put the Panthers in front 7-6 after Piedmont led 5-0 following the first half inning.
Standout Performances
--Four Piedmont athletes had two hit games on the day as
JABIN SMITH,
TYLER BURDETTE,
BRADY BALLSTADT and
CALEB NORTON each recorded a pair of hits in one game.
--The Panthers' Kyle Anstice had a pair of homeruns on the day and five RBI.
Inside the Box Score
--Ferrum had three homeruns in the second game with one in each the first, second and third innings and had one in the first game as well.
News & Notes
--The Panthers scored eight or more runs on Piedmont in each of the three games in the series.
