Maryville, TN - Thanks to an offensive explosion, the Piedmont College baseball team evened the series with the Scots of Maryville College with a 10-1 victory Saturday. The Lions scored early and often and used effective pitching from the mound to silence the Scots.
BEN MCCURLEY earned the victory making him 2-0 this season after tossing five innings giving up just a single run and four hits while striking out six batters. The scoreless tie was broken in the top of the second when
JUSTIN GROOVER drove in a pair of unearned runs after an error in the inning with two outs.
Groover's two RBI double put PC ahead 2-0 and they would tack on another run in the third as
ZACH LANGLEY singled to score
TYLER BURDETTE. Maryville's lone run would come in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch, but McCurley fired back striking out the final two batters of the inning after the run scored.
Piedmont would score three runs in the fourth, chasing the Scots starting pitcher after a
CALEB NORTON single to start the inning. The Lions scored three runs on just three hits and one error and the Scots changed pitchers once again to finish out the inning.
The Lions would score again in the sixth and a three run home run by
BRADY BALLSTADT in the top of the ninth added on the final runs of the game. Seven of Piedmont's nine starters recorded a hit in the contest as PC had 14 hits to the Scots' eight.
Turning Point
--With two outs in the top of the second, an error allowed
COLLIN GRANT to reach and following a
CALEB NORTON walk,
JUSTIN GROOVER knocked in a two RBI double to score both runs and give Piedmont a 2-0 advantage.
Standout Performances
--
NOAH HEATHERLY and
CALEB NORTON both had three hits in the game with Norton going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Inside the Box Score
--
BRADY BALLSTADT recorded his second home run of the season with both coming in the last three games as he had a 3-run home run in the top of the ninth.
News & Notes
--Piedmont's pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts in the game as BEN MCCURLEY earned the win with six strikeouts in five innings.
Up Next
--The Lions are set for the rubber match on Sunday against the Scots with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
