Piedmont's only offensive output was a pair of home runs against the Vikings.
Piedmont took the lead on the Vikings 2-1 in the bottom of the first after
HANNAH HOBAN and
ABBY SMITH went back-to-back with a pair of home runs. For Hoban, that marks her second of her collegiate career while it was Smith's first of the 2016 season.
The Vikings came back to regain the lead in the top of the third with four runs to lead it 5-2 and added on another three to seal the contest.
SARAH WALKER earned the start for Piedmont while
AVERY MIGUES entered in relief.Â
MELISSA ECKMAN earned the start against the Spirits but the Lady Lions were forced to use Walker as well as
MORGAN SCHOLTZ and
KORY BEST to fight the Spirits offensive attack. Salem scored their first three batters of the game to take a 3-0 lead in the first and added another pair of runs in the third before four in the fourth inning leading to a 9-0 finish in five innings.Â
Turning Point--A four-run third inning by the Vikings gave them the lead and the Lady Lions were unable to pull back in the contest
--A three-run top of the first by the Spirits put them in front and set the tone for the second contest of the day.Â
Standout Performances--
HANNAH HOBAN hit another home run against Berry marking her second in two days.
--Piedmont saw back-to-back home runs by Hoban and
ABBY SMITH in the bottom of the first against Berry but those were the only two runs of the game for the Lady Lions.Â
Inside the Box Score--Berry's pitcher Kassie Howard went the complete game giving up just five hits and striking out seven batters.Â
News & Notes--The Lady Lions went 2-2 at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic, ranked as one of the top tournaments in the country this season. Up NextPiedmont is set to take on Covenant College to begin USA South play on March 5 at 1 p.m.
