Demorest, GA - In the home opener for the 2016 season, the Piedmont College men's tennis team picked up a big win against the Atlantic South's 18th ranked team in the Vikings of Berry College, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon.  

The Lions took two of three in doubles and earned four of the six singles decisions as well with the clinching point coming at #5 singles with ROBBIE WERNER coming out on top in three 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 over Jacob Belcher.

The Metzger brothers picked up their second straight win at #1 doubles with an 8-2 decision as Piedmont took the lead into singles.  MATTHEW METZGER would also win his singles decision cruising to a straight sets winner over Chase Gooding.

The Lions will hit the road for their next contest, a USA South opener at William Peace University on February 28 slated to start at 1:00 pm in Carolina.

Turning Point
--ROBBIE WERNER earned the clinching decision knocking off his opponent in a three set thriller winning the third 7-5 to settle the match in favor of Piedmont.

Standout Performances
--MATTHEW METZGER cruised in his #2 singles match-up with a 6-0 decision in the first set before finishing off Chase Gooding in the second, 6-3.
--Werner's win at #5 was huge as he needed a third set to take down Jacob Belcher after rolling 6-0 in the opener.

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont's lead in doubles play was too much for the Vikings to overcome though Berry did pick up singles wins at the #1 and #4 slots.

News & Notes
--PC has won its last five vs. the Vikings with the last loss against Berry coming in 2011.

Up Next
The Lions will get back on the road traveling to William Peace University for the opener in USA South play on February 28.  The match is slated to start at 1:00 pm.
