Sewanee, TN - The Piedmont College tennis team ran into a tough nationally ranked opponent to open the 2016 season as Sewanee handed the Lions a 9-0 defeat earlier today in Tennessee.

The Lions dropped three doubles decisions to start the afternoon before falling in straight sets in all six singles decisions.  Piedmont's NATHAN METZGER and MATTHEW METZGER did put up a strong fight against the #1 doubles pairing in the Atlantic South Region, Eric Roddy and Jack Gray, with Metzger squared falling 8-4.

NATHAN METZGER matched with the region's 10th ranked player in Avery Schober falling in straight sets but took three games off the highly ranked player who is currently #39 in the country according to the ITA.  

With the nationally ranked squad taking down Piedmont, the Lions will now play a neutral site match as part of the two-game swing through Tennessee facing Transylvania tomorrow at 11:00 am, a match hosted by Sewanee.

Turning Point
--An 8-4 decision at #1 doubles set the tone in the 9-0 sweep for the Tigers over the Lions with regionally top ranked Eric Roddy and Jack Gray taking down the Metzger brothers.

Standout Performances
--NATHAN METZGER took three games off 39th ranked Avery Schober at #1 singles.
--Nathan also paired with brother MATTHEW METZGER to battle the top ranked doubles pairing the region before falling 8-4.

Inside the Box Score
--No Lion was able to take a set in singles action.

News & Notes
--Piedmont has dropped its last seven decisions to Sewanee since 2008.

Piedmont stays on the road for a neutral site match against Transylvania at the home of the Sewanee Tigers.  First serve is set for 11:00 am.
