Oglethorpe Shuts Out Piedmont 3-0 in Men's Soccer Action at Walker Athletic Complex

Demorest, GAThe Piedmont College men's soccer team ran up against a tough squad earlier tonight from Oglethorpe University who earned a 3-0 shutout over the hosting Lions in Demorest at the Walker Athletic Complex.  It was an own goal in the 42nd minute that sealed the Lions' fate before OU piled on two more in the contest for the decision away from home in a non-conference battle.

Piedmont's KENNETH HEARN allowed three scores and was forced to make five saves as the Stormy Petrels controlled the match from the midway point of the first half after the two teams settled in.  

The Lions were outshot 18-5 in the contest with no Lion tallying more than one shot each.  OU also held the edge in corners with a 4-1 mark. 


Scoring for Oglethorpe was Jose Perez and Nick Muntean with Perez getting his just before halftime on a shot from just atop the box while Muntean's came on a clean left footed finish right near the PK spot.  

Turning Point
-An own goal by the Lions in the 42nd minute started the breakdown of the Piedmont defense as the Lions allowed another score with under a minute to go in the first half unable to get to the break with the lone error on the board.

Standout Performances
-Current Southern Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week Vaughn Moore in goal for Oglethorpe who played just shy of 70 minutes between the pipes maintaining zero's on the board with three saves on Piedmont opportunities.

Inside the Box Score
-OU dominated the first half to take control outshooting Piedmont 12-3 but did not manage to break through until more than 40 minutes had ticked off the clock.
-The Stormy Petrels were very dynamic in wide areas with many of their 18 shots created by good 1v1 attacking on the flanks.

News & Notes
-The Lions are now 2-9 against the Stormy Petrels since 2003 with their last win over OU coming in 2005, a 1-0 victory in Demorest.
-Of the 11 decisions between the two programs in the last 13 seasons, six have been decided by exactly one goal. 
-Piedmont's largest win in the series came in 2003 when the Lions won 8-1 at home.

Up Next
The Greg Volgas Memorial Tournament hosted by Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee this coming weekend.  Piedmont will play Hendrix College on Saturday, September 12 at noon before taking the host Lynx the following day in a 2:00 pm match.
