Piedmont had taken a lead in the 20th minute on
CULLEN COPLAND's quality finish after
CHASE KANE headed the ball on. The Lions looked in control throughout the half, but faced a ferocious side in the second half with Covenant outshooting PC 10-5 in the final 45 minutes after Piedmont held a 6-3 shot advantage at the half.
Though the Scots could not equalize in the run of play, Covenant was able to convert a penalty kick awarded in the 81st minute to tie the contest 1-1 sending it to extra time to decide a winner. The teams combined for an exciting extra 20 minutes for those fans who stuck around as the rain started to come down and each had chances to end it.
The highlight for PC in the extra period came when senior keeper
KENNETH HEARN made a brilliant one-handed save going to his left just keeping the Covenant shot off the frame to hold the draw 1-1 for Piedmont.
Turning Point--Covenant's PK that tied the contest with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation after Piedmont had earned the lead early in the first half. Standout Performances--CULLEN COPLAND's score in the 20th minute gives him three in his debut campaign for the Lions. --
CHASE KANE also earns an assist for the first time this season with his helper tonight, he leads the team with his five goals.
Inside the Box Score--KENNETH HEARN had three saves on the night including a wonder-save in the first overtime to keep Covenant from walking away with a win.
--The two teams combined for 16 corner kicks as well. News & Notes--Including tonight, Piedmont has now played 12 overtime contests since becoming a USA South member in 2012 with eight of those 12 coming against conference foes.
