Averett's Free Kick in Double Overtime Sinks Lions 3-2 in USA South Men's Soccer Action

Need to Know
Score:  Piedmont 2 - Averett 3 (F-2OT)
Records:  Lions 2-4-2 (1-2 USA South), Cougars 2-6 (1-1 USA South)
Location: Danville, Virginia - Daly Field

Danville, VA - A wonder-strike of a free kick in double overtime was needed for the Averett University Cougars to surpass the Piedmont College men's soccer team 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Virginia.

Piedmont equalized after twice falling behind and came within inches of ending the game in the first overtime period when CHASE KANE headed a service off the crossbar.  However, it was the Cougars who came up with their own dramatic ending instead as David Cuperman scored a 35-yard free kick to give Averett a one-goal win.

Averett scored first converting a PK awarded in the second minute but Piedmont's CULLEN COPLAND equalized in the 29th minute to make it one each before the break.  The Cougars took another lead when Jov Hall scored in the 63rd minute but Kane's header on a COLIN LITTLE cross just 20 minutes later leveled the contest once more at 2-2.

The free kick winner for Averett in overtime puts Piedmont now at 2-4-2 overall and 1-2 in USA South play.

Turning Point
--Averett's David Cuperman scoring on a free kick in double overtime to hand the Cougars a 3-2 win at home.

Standout Performances
--CHASE KANE scored in the 87th minute to send the game into overtime and also headed one off the crossbar in the first OT period coming within inches of handing Piedmont the win.
--CULLEN COPLAND's goal in the first half equalized the contest and gave him his second goal of his debut season for Head Coach Jimmy Stephens.

Inside the Box Score
--Kane's goal with just a few minutes remaining marked the second time in three games the forward has found the back of the net.
--Goalkeeper KENNETH HEARN faced a penalty kick in just the 2nd minute of play getting a hand to the ball but not enough to keep the net clean...From that point forward, Hearn would make 11 saves on the afternoon before the final score of the contest in 2OT.

News & Notes
--Three of the last four games in the series between these two programs have gone to overtime with Averett winning all three of those extra-time contests.
--The Cougars have now won five straight against PC who last defeated Averett in 2010 on the road 3-1.
