West Point, GA - The Piedmont College men's tennis team could not pick up enough to knock off the Skyhawks of Point University earlier today as the Lions dropped a 7-2 decision in the non-conference showdown with the in-state foe.
Getting the win in singles play was
MASON RIZA at the #5 slot as he defeated Andrew Hays of Point in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Riza moves to 6-2 in singles action this season including his work from the ITA's in the fall as the veteran is now 4-1 in five singles decisions this spring alone.
Two others pushed to three sets in singles play with both
NATHAN METZGER (#2 singles) and
BRYAN BARNETT (#6 singles) winning the first set of their matches respectively before falling in the next two. Metzger was also a part of a close doubles decision along with brother
MATTHEW METZGER as the two fell 8-6 at the top doubles slot for PC.
The winning pair in doubles play was
ROBBIE WERNER and
TREY MARTIN as the two took an 8-3 decision from Zach Sheeler and Andrew Hays of Point. Werner and Martin are now 3-2 in doubles play at the #3 spot this season.
With the loss, Piedmont falls to an even 3-3 on the season having dropped two straight matches after a loss to Methodist University this past weekend in league play.
Piedmont will stay out of the USA South for its next contest as well hosting Southern Athletic Association foe Rhodes College this coming Friday, March 20 with first serve set for 3:00 pm at Burgen Tennis Courts.
