Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 to Conference-Leading Maryville in USA South Play

Demorest, GA - Taking on the top team in the league standings, the Piedmont College men's soccer team fell 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Walker Athletic Complex to visiting Maryville College. 

The Scots scored a goal in the first and another in the second to ice the contest, both coming on headers, moving Maryville to 11-1-1 overall and keeping the Scots undefeated in league play.

In the first half, it was a header by Tim Baker that did the work on a redirected corner kick for the Scots with that goal coming in the 26th minute.  Holding a 1-0 lead at the break, Maryville added another on a brilliant header from Alex Waddell off a service from the right flank in the 72nd minute.  

The two goals were enough to hand Maryville its fifth conference win of the season as the Scots top the table with now 16 points. 

Turning Point
--Tim Baker's header that gave Maryville a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, a goal that came off a redirected header from a corner kick for the Scots.

Standout Performances
--KENNETH HEARN in goal for Piedmont had several key stops to keep the score to just two making 10 saves on the night, one shy of a season-high 11 that Hearn had against Averett earlier in the year.
--Alex Waddell of Maryville had a goal and an assist on the evening for the Scots.


Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont was out-shot 17-5 in the first half as the Scots also forced a trio of corners including one they scored on just about midway through the opening 45 minutes.
--Baker's goal in the first half was his second game-winning score in his last four games for the Scots.


News & Notes
--Maryville currently leads the USA South having come into the contest with 10 wins in their first 12 games.

A weekend trip down south to play LaGrange College on Saturday with kickoff set for 4:30 pm on October 17 against the Panthers.
