Men's Tennis Shuts Out Cougars 9-0 to Honor Veteran Quartet on Senior Day at Burgen

In a reference to Grantland Rice's dramatic lore, they may be known by different names, but the Burgen faithful will remember the senior quartet that walked the courts at PC for one of the final times as seniors (from left to right) Patrick Steck, Chris Davidson, Jay Evans, and Joel Silverberg led PC in a 9-0 shutout of visiting Averett.
Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's tennis team gave their four seniors a nice memory at Burgen Tennis Courts in one of their final home matches wearing the Green and Gold as they toppled visiting Averett University 9-0 earlier today.  With the win, Piedmont picks up its 6th shutout victory of the season with only three more wins coming by less than a 9-0 decision in favor of PC who is now 9-6 overall.

The Lions got off to a 3-0 start after the doubles portion with the pairing of Matthew Metzger and Mason Riza rolling to an 8-1 decision over Alexander Terentiev and Kirill Baranov of Averett.  At the #2 slot, one of Piedmont's four seniors being recognized took a big momentum point as veteran Christopher Davidson paired with Robbie Werner for an 8-5 win.  It was then the senior duo of Patrick Steck and Joel Silverberg who made short work of Noreila and Westhusing at the #3 doubles slot, winning 8-0 to move to 8-3 in doubles play this season.

Piedmont took all six singles matches as well with Riza winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at the #5 slot as no Lion would drop a set on the day to the Cougars. Matthew Metzger would pick up his 7th win at the #1 spot taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Alexander Terentiev while Trey Martin took his singles decision 6-2, 6-2 at #3.

The rest of the day belonged the veterans as Joel Silverberg won at #2 singles 6-0, 6-4 to move to 9-6 in singles play this season while Patrick Steck knocked off Samu Rasila at the #4 spot 6-1, 6-1 for his 5th singles win of the year.  Veteran Jay Evans wrapped up the competition with his 6-4, 6-3 win at the #6 spot to push his season record to now an incredible 6-1 having won his last four decisions.

The win moves Piedmont to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play, good enough for a 4th place tie with LaGrange College in the standings.  Piedmont plays host to Greensboro College tomorrow morning at 9:30 am for their regular season finale in what could be a deciding match for the Lions' standing heading into the conference tourney next weekend.
