Lions Lacrosse Upset 16-8 in Second Half by Ferrum

#5 Frank Cariello, a freshman, earned a goal and assisted two others in the Lions 16-8 loss against Ferrum today.
Box Score Demorest, GA — It was a talf of two halves today as the Lions lead at halftime but faltered in the second half, evenutally losing 16-8 to the visiting Panthers of Ferrum College. Piedmont was outshot in each period and the Lions' goalkeepers combined for 21 saves.

Piedmont began today's game on the defensive due to a strong, early Panthers attack. Junior Dale Morley made four great saves in the first five minutes of action to maintain the 0-0 score. Just after the ten minute mark though, Ferrum notched a pair of goals for the early lead. The Lions began to fight back and earned a few shots of their own. Under seven minutes to play in the period, the Lions finally found a goal. Sophomore Holin Axley picked up a ground ball and after a quick one-two pass with Frank Cariello he found an opportunity on goal and scored for Piedmont's first goal of the match. Two minutes later, Taylor Carter tied it up, 2-2, on a man-up goal assisted by Sumner Gantz. Unfortunately, Ferrum was able to counter with two minutes left in the period and take a 3-2 lead at the first intermission.

Morley started off the second period with another couple saves. The defensive effort translated into an offensive opportunity and Taylor Carter had his second goal of the match thanks to Cariello's second assist. Ferrum was ready though, bouncing back and taking a 4-3 lead with twelve minutes left on the clock. The Panthers took a 5-3 lead a few minutes later, but under eight minutes to play Piedmont notched two goals to tie it back up. Frank Cariello beat a set of defenders to grab the first score unassisted, while junior Spencer Ortis scored the latter goal on a Carter assist. Possession went back and forth for the next few minutes until there were under four minutes to play. Patrick Ammons caused a turnover, grabbed the first ground ball, and after getting knocked around and dropping the ball just outside the goal he picked up a second ground ball and swiftly shot the ball near post for a great goal and the 6-5 lead. The Lions held off Ferrum for the final minutes of the half and roared into the halftime intermission with the 6-5 lead and momentum.

The Panthers began the third period with an early goal and two more another five minutes into play to come back and grab an 8-6 lead. The Lions were unsuccessful converting any shots in the third period, while giving up two more goals late in the period to fall behind 10-6 at the final intermission.

In the fourth period, Piedmont started things off well with a Spencer Ortis goal assisted by Sumner Gantz less than a minute into play. Ferrum then added two more goals quickly and a third several minutes later. The Lions countered the next faceoff won by Gantz with a great unassisted goal by junior Nick Green. Unfortunately, it was Piedmont's last goal of the match. The Lions gave up three more goals in the final minutes of play and the final score was 16-8 at the buzzer. Dale Morley played the first three period earning seventeen saves in the contest. Mick Baker took over in the fourth period and notched four saves.

The Lions are now 5-7 overall with two matches remaining in their 2014 season. They'll take a week of practice before travelling to Methodist University next Saturday for a 1:00 PM match.
