Box Score 2 Rocky Mount, NC - The Piedmont College softball team will continue its journey at the USA South Championship Tournament in Rocky Mount after winning a pair of games on Elimination Saturday. The Lady Lions held on to a 2-1 win against 6th seeded Greensboro College in the morning before taking a 3-1 decision over 4th seeded Ferrum College in the afternoon to move on to Championship Sunday.
In the opener, Piedmont got on the board quickly getting a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as a #
TORI MITCHELL sac fly scored ALLISON VAUGHN# from third as she had reached earlier on a single back up the middle. After taking the 1-0 lead, #
LAURA CARTER smacked a double to centerfield which scored OLIVIA DUNCAN# from second to double the margin for PC in the contest at 2-0.
Carter has shown up big for PC in the tourney as she is now hitting .417 in the two-day, four-game postseason for PC with three doubles, three RBIs, and four runs scored. With a 2-0 margin at their disposal, pitcher #
BRITTNEY HEAD# went to work in the circle allowing just four hits while fanning five and walking one in the first game.
Head's only run given up was on a strange play in the 6th as Madison Crisco struck out with a runner at third and second, but the play had to completed with a throw to first which allowed Sarah Connelly to take home and cut the margin in half. Piedmont would get a strikeout to get out of the inning as Head was brilliant on the mound, and retired the order 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th to clinch an unnerving 2-1 win over Greensboro in the first game of two on Saturday, setting up a 2:00 pm date with Ferrum College, the tourney's 4th seed, later in the day.
Head would again be called on to pitch the second game as she answered the call of her long time head coach with another impressive performance allowing just three hits to Ferrum College though the Panthers would get on the board first with a run in the top of the second. A double to left field scored the run against PC who trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the second.
However, the veteran pitcher for PC got run support from her Lady Lion teammates in the home half of the inning as #
LAURA CARTER# led off with a double before stealing third to put the tying run just 60 feet away. A ground out to third forced Carter to stay at third, but a bunt single from #
JESSICA PERSCHKA followed up LAUREN HEAD# reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases for the tourney's top seed.
The pressure then sat on the bat of #
WHITNEY WOLFE#, the shortstop for Piedmont, who came up with one out and the bags full of Lady Lions. Wolfe smacked a single to the gap in right center to answer the call driving in a pair of runs though that would be all Piedmont could get taking a 2-1 lead after two complete.
Now with the lead in hand, Piedmont pitcher #
BRITTNEY HEAD# retired the side in order the next three innings before allowing a two-out single and a walk to put two on in the top of the 6th inning. However, Head induced an infield fly out to get her team out of the inning and down to the home half where Piedmont provided more run support as #
LAURA CARTER# came across to make it a 3-1 game heading to the top of the 7th.
A line out to 3rd, a grounder to short, and a fly ball to centerfield spelt the end of the Ferrum postseason as Head once again retired the side in order to give her team a second win on the day keeping alive the dream of a tourney title for the Lady Lions who already claimed a regular season title earlier this season in the USA South.
With the pair of wins, Piedmont moves to 38-6 on the season extending their winningest season in the program's history. Should the Lady Lions win the title tomorrow by winning three games back-to-back-to-back, Piedmont would surpass 40 wins in a single season for the first time ever as well.
The Lady Lions will now face the same team who handed them a loss in the tourney opener back on Friday morning, the #8 seed Panthers of LaGrange College, a team that Piedmont has a great deal of championship history with dating back to their time as Great South Athletic Conference member schools.
That Sunday game with LaGrange is set for 10:00 am with the winner of that matchup moving on to face #2 seed Huntingdon College who awaits in the championship round which would begin at 1:00 pm. The Hawks handed the Panthers their first loss in the conference tourney earlier today setting up Piedmont's date with the Panthers tomorrow morning.
