Fayetteville, N.C. — Piedmont's Men's Lacrosse team was surely excited after grabbing a late sudden death overtime goal against Methodist to win 12-11 on the road in their penultimate match of the 2014 season.
Nick Green led the offense with three goals while
Dale Morley posted a strong showing in goal with fourteen saves.
Although
Sumner Gantz won the first faceoff for Piedmont—he would go 14-25 in the match—Methodist was the first to strike gold, scoring less than two minutes into play. The Lions rebounded quickly though with a swift
Holin Axley score one minute later. Both teams then went on shooting sprees but neither goalkeeper would relent for five minutes. Junior
Nick Green was the tiebreaker with his first goal of the match with eight minutes left to play in the period. Several minutes passed with Methodist on the offensive and they were able to convert a pair of shots into goals. Green was still around though and he kept the score even 3-3 with a goal splitting the two Methodist scores before the first intermission.
The Lions have gotten their faceoff assists down to science as
Sumner Gantz won the faceoff at the start of the second period and assisted a
Taylor Carter goal immediately. Moving in the right direction,
Nick Green broke through the defense of Methodist and scored his third goal moments later for the 5-3 lead. In the latter half of the second period, Methodist notched three goals but they weren't enough for a comeback as Piedmont held it's lead thanks to three goals of its own. Gantz led the way with his first followed by Axley on his second goal—both assisted by
Steve Blanchard. In the final minute of the period,
Spencer Ortis made his mark with a smart goal assisted by Axley to give Piedmont an 8-6 lead at halftime.
Play was stale for the first five minutes of the third period until
Steve Blanchard notched his first goal thanks to a
Patrick Ammons assist. Methodist put in two of their own goals in the next eight minutes before
Spencer Ortis could score again to hold the lead. Methodist inched closer again with a goal under a minute left to allow only a 10-9 Piedmont lead at the final intermission.
Methodist took the lead with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter. It looked to be a tough situation for Piedmont, but freshman
Frank Cariello stepped up to the challenge and scoring the 11-11 tying goal with under eight minutes left on the clock by way of a Blanchard assist. Try as Methodist might in the final minutes of regulation, they couldn't get another goal past Lions goalkeeper
Dale Morley. The score stuck as both teams gathered to plan for overtime.
Overtime was the same story as Morley continued to motivate his defense and offense by effect. With Men's Lacrosse rules dictating two sudden death overtime periods, the pressure was on for both defenses. Morley made his efforts known to all with a brilliant save in overtime to keep Piedmont in the game. Motivated, the Lions turned to the offensive and after a series of attempts on goal
Taylor Carter struck gold on an assist by
Holin Axley for the game-winner that sent the team running to celebrate and the crowd roaring.
The Lions are now 6-7 overall with the sweet victory. They'll host Huntingdon College on Saturday, April 19th for a 4:00 PM match at the Walker Athletic Complex in Demorest, GA.
