Box Score Demorest, GA — Piedmont's Men's Lacrosse team comes away from Rhodes College today with a 14-9 loss. While the Lions led the first period and seven seperate players scored in the match, they couldn't match the Lynx in each of the remaining periods on the scoreboard.
While Piedmont didn't get the first goal of the match – the Lions gave up a goal man-down two minutes into play – scoring came quickly enough in the first half as sophomore attacker
Branson Mikell put away the first Piedmont score at three minutes into play. Exactly three minutes later, the Lions earned a man-up opportunity and after several shots a hair wide of the target the Lions got goal number two courtesy of sophomore
Taylor Carter.
Both teams put in work for the next few minutes of the period with several turnovers on both sides and a solid save by
Mick Baker in goal. After a quick clear at 5:49 left,
Nick Green found a lane and blasted a shot, scoring for the 3-1 lead. The Lions continued to put hard shots on frame for the next few minutes. It payed off at 1:19 left with a sharp goal by junior
Steve Blanchard. Not to be outdone, the Lynx found a second goal moments later to set the score at 4-2 for the first intermission.
In period two, the Lions were less successful giving up a pair of goals in the first five minutes to allow the Lynx to tie up the score. Rhodes took the lead at 8:09 left in the period then gave it up again when
Patrick Ammons scored swiftly after picking up the faceoff groundball. Unfortunately, Rhodes scored again for the 6-5 lead a few minutes later. Rhodes would score two more goals in the period and seemed to have the lead buttoned up, but the Lions weren't ready to fall. With seconds falling off the clock, sophomore
Holin Axley rocketed a ball through the Lynx defense to score a halftime buzzer-beater and relax the score at 8-6, advantage Rhodes.
Both teams traded goals early in period three with Ammons getting his second and final goal to answer an early Lynx goal. Rhodes then leaped ahead with a pair of scores.
Spencer Ortis tried to lead an offensive late in the half with an Ammons assisted goal but it wasn't enough as the Lions fell behind 11-8 at the final intermission.
In the final period, Rhodes' offense continued to pound the Lions scoring three more goals.
Spencer Ortis grabbed the lone Lion goal of the period at 5:55 remaining thanks to a
Taylor Carter assist. The Lions were unsuccessful on the road for the second time this season, losing today's match at Rhodes 14-9. The Lynx outshot the Lions 44-33 in four periods.
Piedmont now moves to an even 3-3 after dropping the last three matches. They'll look to reverse their fortune with a neutral site match against Wesley College March 13th in Fort Mill, South Carolina; Game time is scheduled for 4:00 PM. Stay tuned to
