Box Score Greensboro, NC — Piedmont Men's Lacrosse took an early lead but were overpowered in the middle periods, losing 17-11 at Greensboro College this afternoon. The Lions were outshot 56-28 in the match.
The Lions took a dramatic lead seconds into play with a goal by
Patrick Ammons thanks to a
Sumner Gantz faceoff win and assist. Piedmont held the lead for half of the period deflecting numerous shots before Greensboro put in two goals of their own. What followed was a great show of athleticism as junior
Nick Green launched an offensive, scoring two solo goals in the last five minutes of the period for the 3-2 lead.
In the second period, the Pride scored two goals for the lead, but sophomore
Holin Axley answered with a tying 4-4 goal under ten minutes left in the half. Unfortunately, the rest of the half belonged to Greensboro as they walked away with six more goals and a 10-4 lead at halftime.
Sophomore
Taylor Carter got scoring started in the second half thanks to a
Spencer Ortis assist two minutes into play. The Pride then answered over a ten minute period with a trio of goals. Only
Holin Axley could lead another offensive effort, scoring a swift goal under three minutes left before two more Pride goals and the final intermission.
Piedmont trailed 15-6 at the start of the fourth period. Never a team to back down and quit early, they fought hard beginning with a solo
Branson Mikell goal less than a minute into play.
Taylor Carter followed it with another Ortis-assisted goal. Both teams then settled in defensively for a long period. Greensboro took a 16-8 lead under six minutes left to play. The Lions then answered with a trio of goals in hopes of a comeback. Mikell led the way followed by goals by Axley and Steve Blanchard#. Unfortunately it would not be enough to make up the deficit including a final Pride goal in the final seconds of play. Junior
Dale Morley earned the loss making 24 saves on the day.
Piedmont moves to 5-6 overall after the short road trip. They'll take a week off competition to focus on practice before hosting Ferrum College on Saturday, April 5th for an early 11:00 am match in Demorest, GA.
