7-Run 5th Saves Sweep for #11 Lady Lions as Piedmont Takes Two from USA South Foe Maryville

Third baseman Abby Smith went four for five in today's doubleheader sweep of Maryville College coming up with the leadoff single that started Piedmont's 7-run 5th inning in game two before picking up an RBI single later in the inning.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team had to rally late to complete a doubleheader sweep of Maryville College earlier today as the Scots held a 4-0 advantage before Piedmont scored 7 runs in the 5th to overtake the visitors.  After a dominating 8-0 win in six innings in the opener today, the Lady Lions helped MC hold a big advantage early by making three errors in the top of the 2nd before rallying for a three-run win in game two, 7-4.

Piedmont had little trouble in game one earning the victory over the visiting Maryville Scots as senior Brittney Head was dealing in the circle sitting down the side in order in the both the first and second innings to give the Lady Lions a chance to start out hot.  Piedmont responded to their veteran pitcher by tallying single runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd innings with Laura Carter, Olivia Duncan, and Lauren Head each picking up RBI singles in the early going.

Holding a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th, Piedmont would bring four home in the inning as Duncan would pick up a pair of RBIs on a single with one out scoring Whitney Wolfe and Jessica Perschka.  Duncan would later score along with teammate Allison Vaughn on a two-out double by Jordin Ellingson as Piedmont took a 7-0 lead after five complete.

The Lady Lions ended in the bottom of the 6th as Lauren Head lead off the inning with a double to the gap and later moved to third on a Perschka single.  Maryrose Burns then pinch ran for Head at 3rd and scored on the next at-bat as the shortstop Wolfe singled her teammate in to put the final at 8-0 after six.

Head got the win in the shortened game one to move to 11-1 on the year as she threw all six innings allowing only five hits and shutting out the opponent for third time in her last three appearances.  The senior walked just one batter and struck out a pair as none of the five hits allowed went for extra bases while Head lowered her ERA on the season to 1.76.

In game two, the Lady Lions had a nightmare top of the 2nd as two hits and a trio of Piedmont errors led to a 3-0 lead for Maryville as the Scots stunned the nationally ranked squad from Demorest who had just run ruled the visitors from Tennessee in the opener.  Another run by Maryville on a Kayla Aloisi single in the top of the third made it only more real as the Scots held a 4-0 advantage after four complete.

After pitcher Jordin Ellingson retired the side in order in the top of the 5th for a second straight 3-up, 3-down inning, the Lady Lions saw their chances dwindling as only three more innings at the plate remained for PC to pull off the comeback.  However, little did they know they would need only one as the bottom of the 5th turned into a 7-run rally as the Lady Lions came alive at the plate following back-to-back singles to lead off the inning by Abby Smith and Laura Carter

With two on now for Jessica Perschka, the Piedmont first baseman put the ball in play as Smith, who had advanced to 3rd on the previous play, came home beating the throw at home to make it now 4-1 Maryville.  Youngster Avery Migues was then called upon to come up big as she pinch hit for Head Coach Terry Martin, and delivered for her coach as she singled in a pair scoring Perschka and Carter to make it now just a one-run deficit at Walker Athletic Complex.

Having closed the gap without an out in the inning, Whitney Wolfe's infield single only added to the pressure as she loaded the bases as Piedmont tried to rally late.  After an Allison Vaughn fly ball found the glove of the Maryville right fielder too shallow for a run to score, Olivia Duncan would single in a pair of runs to give Piedmont the go ahead as Duncan drove in a team-high five on the day going three for six at the plate in the DH.

Ellingson would add insurance and help her own cause with a sac fly to follow up the Duncan 2-RBI basehit before Abby Smith got back around in the 5th after leading it off with a single.  She ended the offensive showcase with the 7th run coming on a single in her second at-bat of the inning as Piedmont all of a sudden had surged in front 7-4.

Ellingson now had no problem with a three-run lead in hand as she retired the side in order in the 6th before sitting down three of the four she faced in the 7th on the way to closing out a 3-run win at home to move her record to now 15-2 on the season. Ellingson allowed just one earned run as three Piedmont errors led to the other three allowed as she gave up five hits walking nobody and fanning five.

Offensive leaders included Duncan with her five RBIs on a .500 day at the plate while Abby Smith was four for five with two runs scored as she started off the 7-run 5th in game two with a leadoff single.  Christine Mobley proved to be a threat as well as she went just one for four with two runs scored but drew a game-high four walks.

The pair of wins moves Piedmont to now an incredible 27-3 overall and 15-1 in conference play as the Lady Lions aim for their second USA South regular season title in just two seasons as a conference member.  The Lady Lions hold a 2 game lead in the top spot of the conference standings, but face the second place Huntingdon Hawks this coming Saturday afternoon.

Piedmont will have to travel to Montgomery for that March 29th doubleheader against second place Huntingdon as the Lady Lions own a 9-1 mark in ten road games this season.  The DH with HC is set to start at 1:00 pm.
