Lions Defeated 15-6 at Home by Centre

Although the Lions lost the match 15-6, the bright spot was a trio of goals by junior Nick Green.
Box Score Demorest, GA — Piedmont Men's Lacrosse was defeated at home this evening by the visiting Colonels of Centre College. The Lions weren't able to hold off heavy shooting by the visitors in the first half gathering only 11 attempts to Centre's 30.

Junior Sumner Gantz got the early advantage with a faceoff win against Centre; the midfielder went 10-22 from the center circle this evening and gathered an assist as well. Unfortunately, the Colonels turned it around shortly after and got the first goal of the match. Both teams then pushed offensively throwing shots at each others nets. Centre took a two goal lead moments later. Dale Morley stuck it out in goal making several good saves in the first period to hold back the Colonel's offensive efforts and the first period ended with just a 0-2 deficit for the Lions.

The Lions welcomed an extra man opportunity at the start of the second half and Nick Green succeeded in scoring off a Gantz assist less than a minute into play. On the other end of the field though, Centre staged an answer and put in four goals in five minutes for a 6-1 lead. The Lions continued to put their own pressure but too many shots were blocked, wide, or saved. The Colonels put in another goal just under two minutes, but the Lions weren't willing to conced the half yet. Sophomore Taylor Carter stepped up and scored swiftly from distance first. With the clock under a minute, Frank Cariello pulled up a ground ball and moved it around to Nick Green. The junior saw a gray jersey inside and strung a shot into Steve Blanchard who scored a brilliant goal before half. The long intermission came with Centre up 7-3.

The Lions were less than fortunate in the third period giving up two goals in the first five minutes. After a fruitless couple moments of action, Nick Green hit his second goal of the match assisted by Holin Axley. Under two minutes left in the match, Axley then found his shot and scored to drop the deficit to 9-5. Patrick Ammons and Green both put hard shots on frame in the final minute but neither were successful before time expired in the third period.

Unfortunately for Piedmont, Centre were not done scoring and the Colonels added six goals through much of the fourth quarter. The Lions found a bright spot in the fourth quarter under three minutes to play. The Lions took a timeout to sort their game plan and came away with a winning play that saw Nick Green earn his third goal quickly after play returned. Sadly, the scoring was finished for the game and Piedmont came away with the 15-6 loss after 60 minutes of play.

The Lions are now an even 5-5 as they move deeper into the latter half of the season. Four games remain for Piedmont with the first a trip to Greensboro College Saturday, March 29th at 1:00 pm.
