Sweet 16 for PC Softball as Lady Lions Stretch Winning Streak with Two Wins on Saturday

Those responsible for the work in the circle for Piedmont also got it done at the plate in a pair of wins on Saturday as pitcher Jordin Ellingson (right) and catcher Olivia Duncan (#22, center) combined to go eight for 12 with seven RBIs and three runs scored.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team picked up two more wins today to finish play in the Lady Lion Round Robin Classic hosted at Piedmont's own beautiful Walker Athletic Complex.  With Truett-McConnell and Salem both visiting campus for the tourney, PC picked up right where they left off yesterday winning a game from each of the two visiting opponents to finish the home tourney a perfect 4-0 and stretch their overall winning streak to now 16 straight games with 10 of those coming in shortened games due to the 8-run rule.

In their opening game of the day facing the Salem Spirits, Piedmont made short work of the GSAC member visiting Walker Athletic Complex taking a 9-1 decision after just five innings, the second straight shortened game against the Spirits for PC over the last two days at the Round Robin Classic.

Piedmont started the scoring in the bottom of the first as yesterday's fielding hero Christine Mobley came around to score as she was driven in by Olivia Duncan for a 1-0 lead.  Salem tied the game up at 1's in the top of the second on an RBI double, but the Lady Lions quickly broke the even score in the bottom half of the same frame as Abby Smith, who led the bottom of the second off with a triple, scored from third on a ground ball put in play by Laura Carter.

Senior Lauren Head would score later in the inning after reaching on a single as she took advantage of a wild pitch by the Spirits to make the score 2-1 after two innings complete.  The Lady Lions added three more runs in the third to push their lead to 6-1 as Jordin Ellingson doubled in a run before a single by freshman Jessica Perschka brought both Abby Smith and Cimberlee Leffler across in the inning.

Needing three more scores to end the game early by the run rule, Piedmont picked up a trio in the 4th as Allison Vaughn doubled in a run while another Ellingson single plated a pair later in the inning to put the final at 9-1 PC after the Lady Lions closed out the game in the top of the 5th.

Senior Brittney Head picked up the win in the opener tossing five complete innings allowing just one earned run on four hits as she has settled in her last six games in the circle.  Head has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of those six games twice shutting out the opponent while she has not walked a batter in four of her last five games with the ball in hand.

Game two was more of the same though the opponent changed up as Piedmont knocked off Truett-McConnell College 8-0 in five innings as PC needed not to play a 6th inning in either game today.  The Lady Lions hit well behind the solid pitching of Jordin Ellingson who held Truett to just one hit on the day, that coming on a leadoff single in the top of the 1st as Ellingson gave up no more base knocks the rest of the day.

Piedmont scored first against the Bears when they put up five in the bottom of the second inning putting the game out of reach early on.  After the youngster Jessica Perschka sparked the scoring with an RBI single that scored Laura Carter, Piedmont's Olivia Duncan would finish off the 5-run second with a two-out double that scored a pair.

Duncan went two for three against the Bears, four of six on the day as she led the Lady Lions at the plate throughout the weekend.  The sophomore is having no trouble following up a splash of a freshman season when she hit .431 on the year as she is hitting .516 through 22 games for PC in 2014, 3rd highest average in the league as her 23 RBIs leads the USA South in that category.

After taking the 5-0 lead, Ellingson would help her own cause with a two-RBI double in the 4th that scored Duncan and freshman Allison Vaughn, last week's Rookie of the Week in the USA South.  An RBI single in the Piedmont 5th by shortstop Whitney Wolfe sealed the deal at 8-0 after Ellingson had sat down three of the four batters she saw in the top of the inning as Piedmont utilized the run rule yet again to get the dominant win.

On the weekend, Piedmont was led by Laura Carter's five RBIs while three more tallied four each in Duncan, Perschka, and Ellingson.  Duncan was also the leader in average hitting .667 in the Round Robin as she went six for nine with five runs scored, a team high.

With the pair of wins, Piedmont moves to an incredible 20-2 and has won 16 straight after dropping a doubleheader to Brenau University almost a month ago.  Perhaps the most impressive piece of the streak has been the types of games the Lady Lions have won as 10 of them in run rule fashion though two of the remaining five have come in walkoff fashion in the Lady Lions' last at-bat.

Piedmont will now have the week off from competition before traveling to face USA South foe North Carolina Wesleyan College next weekend.  The Friday afternoon doubleheader on March 21st is set to start at 2:00 pm.
