Box Score Fort Mill, SC -- Piedmont Men's Lacrosse fought late, but came away from the neutral site game with a 13-11 loss against Wesley College. The Lions trailed the Wolverines for most of the game then staged a late comeback in the fourth period, falling by just two goals.
On a cold windy day, the Lions tried to set themselves up for success early with a the first goal of the match.
Spencer Ortis scored his fourteenth goal of the season two minutes into play thanks to a
Taylor Carter assist. Unfortunately, Wesley was waiting to strike and answered over a five minute period with a trio of goals.
Steve Blanchard broke the spell with a Lions goal three minutes til the first intermission and the score stuck 3-2, advantage Wesley, as the rest of the period expired.
In the second period, Piedmont wasn't able to hold possession as well as usual. Wesley scored first but junior
Nick Green was given an opportunity by Blanchard shortly after scoring to keep the deficit within one. Wesley took off though, scoring three and grabbing a 7-3 lead at haftime.
The Wolverines didn't stop pushing with four goals into the first part of period three. The Lions defense worked hard to hold more attempts at bay. Under six minutes remaining in the period and down by eight, freshman
Frank Cariello and sophomore
Holin Axley scored two goals in succession to start a comeback.
Down 11-5 going into the final period, the Lions clawed at any chance they could get on goal. Ortis led the charge with another goal assisted by Carter. Wesley answered several minutes later with a pair of goals, but
Branson Mikell notched a goal in between the pair to muffle their cheers.
Under seven minutes to play, freshman
Andy Houghton was put into play to help out. The attacker took a chance and scored his first collegiate goal for the Lions courtesy of a smart Axley assist.
A minute later, the experinced junior midfielder,
Sumner Gantz scored his fourth season goal to inch the score closer. With time running lower and lower, Axley and Green started firing shots on goal. They both hit the mark at three and two minutes remaining respectively. Unfortunately, no more shots would reach the net as time ran out and the scoreboard displayed 13-11. Junior
Dale Morley tended the goal for the Lions today, leading the defense against a tough Wolverine offense and making several key saves to keep Piedmont motivated.
With the loss, the Lions are now 3-4 halfway through the 2014 season. They continue their road travels with a trip to West Point, GA on Sunday, March 16th to face Point University. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
