Piedmont Stays Perfect in Birmingham with 6-4 Win Over North Park University

Preston Graham picked up his second win in three starts this season when he went better than seven innings on the mound allowing just three hits and a pair of runs in Saturday's 6-4 win over North Park University in Birmingham.
Box Score Birmingham, AL - The Piedmont College baseball team picked up its second win of their trip to Birmingham as the Lions knocked off North Park University 6-4 playing at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Saturday afternoon in a tournament hosted by Birmingham Southern College.  Piedmont's young pitcher Preston Graham got the win on the mound going seven and a third allowing just two earned runs on the day while Jacob Brewster got the save in his fifth appearance of the season.

Piedmont's offense came in a pair of three-run innings as the Lions tabbed a trio both in the 4th and 6th innings to earn a 6-0 advantage before North Park was able to plate a single run.  Breck Davidson continued his hot streak at the plate doubling to left center for the RBI single that scored Josh Bailey in the 4th while Michael Barnes and Zack Johnson also collected RBIs in the inning.

In the Piedmont 6th, the Lions got all three of their runs with two outs as a pair of walks sandwiched a Michael Barnes single to load the bases for PC with Daniel Lindsey coming to the plate.  A wild pitch allowed pinch hitter Evan Gresham to score from third and each of the other two runners to advance right before Lindsey doubled them both in to double Piedmont's 3-0 lead from the 4th to now 6-0 in the 6th.

Things got scary in the North Park 8th as the Vikings scored four runs in the inning to cut the deficit to two runs before relief pitcher Josh Thomas struck out the final batter of the inning to leave a runner stranded at third and keep the lead intact for Piedmont.

In the 9th inning, it was time for closer Jacob Brewster to do his thing as he struck out the three batters he saw with ease to pick up his third save of the season in five appearances for PC.

Getting the win on the hill was youngster Preston Graham who moves his record now to 2-1 on the season with the solid performance as he allowed only three hits on the day with a pair of runs charged to him in the North Park 8th.  The freshman walked four and struck out a pair facing 27 batters on the day to pick up the victory.

At the plate, PC was led by third baseman Michael Barnes who went three for four with a run scored and an RBI while Daniel Lindsey went two for four picking up his pair of RBIs on that 6th inning, two-out double.  Will Skidmore also went 2-for-4 while youngster Griffin Olson picked up a hit for the 6th time in seven games to start his Piedmont career after collecting a hit in each of the first five games for Piedmont in 2014.

With the win Piedmont moves to 5-2 on the season and stays perfect in Birmingham at 2-0 on their weekend trip.  The Lions will try to make it 3-0 when they play the host Panthers of Birmingham Southern College who are 4-0 heading into Sunday.  The February 23rd contest is set for a 6:00 pm start Eastern, and fans can follow the action with live stats provided courtesy of the Panthers.
