Four of a Kind for Lady Lion Softball as Game 1 Walkoff Sparks DH Sweep of Elmira

The Lady Lions plated 9 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Elmira College earlier today to stay perfect in 2014 with a 4-0 record taking down a squad that finished with 25 wins in 2013.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The 13th ranked Piedmont College softball team swept another doubleheader earlier today winning a pair of contests over visiting Elmira College as the Lady Lions won game one in walkoff fashion to start the day.  Piedmont's Tori Mitchell belted a walkoff single down the left field line for the winner in game one before the Lady Lions exploded offensively in game two to win a 7-2 decision from the Soaring Eagles who now travel to LaGrange College Thursday afternoon to face the Panthers in the last of their six game swing through Georgia.

In game one, it was time for Jordin Ellingson to throw another gem as she threw a complete game allowing no earned runs on five hits as the only Elmira score came after an error in the 6th.  Ellingson didn't issue a single walk striking out three to move her record to a perfect 2-0 in 2014.

Piedmont scored first in game one as Olivia Duncan singled in teammate Allison Vaughn who tripled earlier in the inning as the Lady Lions went up 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th.  However, Elmira was quick to tie things up as an RBI triple scored the outfielder Bupp to even things back up at 1-1 putting the home team on the edge.

Extra innings would be needed to decide the opener as Ellingson faced a runner at third with just one out in the top of the 8th to calmly collect the final two outs of the frame and give her team a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning.  After a sac bunt moved Olivia Duncan across to third, Tori Mitchell would be called on by Head Coach Terry Martin to pinch hit with Duncan representing the winning run only 60 feet away.

Mitchell had success in 2013 against Elmira going 1-for-3 with a run scored, two RBIs, and a double in two wins over the Soaring Eagles.  The success against the New York foe continued for Mitchell today as she drilled a Soaring Eagle pitch down the left field line to bring Duncan in to score as Piedmont walked off with a 2-1 win in the opener.

In the second game, Piedmont's offense clicked early on as Duncan picked up another RBI single in the opening inning before PC exploded offensively in the 4th scoring four runs, three of which came on a three-RBI triple by shortstop Whitney Wolfe.  Youngster Madison Eubanks also picked up an RBI in the inning as Piedmont went up 6-0 after four.

That half dozen-run lead would be more than enough for the senior Brittney Head who allowed no runs during her time in the circle as she struck out a pair and issued no walks.  Head gave up only four hits sitting down nine straight batters from the 2nd to the 5th as she continues to be Ms. Consistency for Head Coach Terry Martin.

Also getting time was youngster Sarah Walker who began her Piedmont pitching career taking the last inning of the game two 7-2 win for Piedmont.  Walker struck out the first batter she faced and was one out away from a scoreless showing before a two-out single scored a pair.  However, the freshman pitcher looked good from the start and will likely be a key piece on an already stellar pitching staff.

With the wins, Piedmont moves to 4-0 on the season and is the only team in the USA South that has seen competition and not yet experienced a loss in 2014.

The Lady Lions now will face NAIA foe Brenau University who is nationally ranked themselves coming in at #17 in the latest NAIA national poll.  The Golden Tigers are also 4-0 on the season having won their four games by a combined 36-4 and were 34-16 in the 2013 season.

Thursday's doubleheader with Brenau is set to begin at 2:00 at Walker Athletic Complex. Fans will be able to follow the action with live stats, but a video broadcast will not be available.
