Box Score 2 DEMOREST, Georgia - The #11 ranked Piedmont College softball team split a double header with visiting #2 ranked Emory University this afternoon on Senior Day. The visitors took game one by the score of 12-2 but the Lady Lions responded in the nightcap taking the decision 5-4 in dramatic fashion.
The Eagles came out swinging in the opener posting three runs on four hits in the top of the first highlighted by a pair of doubles. After holding the Lady Lions scoreless, Emory posted another three runs on a pair of hits in the second to take command 6-0.
The visitors would add six more runs over the next two innings before Piedmont answered with two runs in the fifth.
Taylor Morgan and
Olivia Duncan posted back to back triples and
Kristin Hamby capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly. The lead would prove to be to much to overcome and the Eagles took the five-inning decision.
In the finale the Eagles again struck first with two runs in the second and single runs in the next two innings to take command 4-0. Piedmont would cut the lead in half in the fifth as
Jordin Ellingson drilled an RBI-triple and later scored on a
Megan McClain sacrifice fly.
Megan Kesler blasted an RBI-triple in the fifth cutting the deficit to 4-3 and setting up the dramatic seventh inning.
Abby Atkinson reached first on an error and moved to second on McClain's single. After Morgan was hit by a pitch
Olivia Duncan promptly drilled a double to left field scoring the tying and go-ahead runs and sealing the walk-off win.
Ellingson went the distance, including retiring the final 10 hitters she faced in order, for her 15th win of the season. Duncan led the offense on the day going 3-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI's. The four seniors combined for seven hits and a pair of runs scored and RBI's respectively.
The Lady Lions, now 30-6 overall, will return to action on Friday, April 12 as they travel to the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. Piedmont, the #2 seed in the tournament, will take on #7 Greensboro College starting at 11:00.
