Box Score 2 Raleigh, N.C. - The Piedmont Softball team traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina today to face USA South conference opponent Meredith College in a doubleheader. The Lady Lions came away with wins in both games by scores of 4-3 and 6-2.
Game one didn't seen any offensive action until the top of the third when singles by
Megan Kesler,
Abby Atkinson and
Megan McClain loaded the bases.
Olivia Duncan reached base on balls to move the runners for the first run and
Kristin Hamby RBI singled to center field to score two more.
The Avenging Angels of Meredith kept the game close with a three-run fifth inning. Four singles against the Lady Lions defense scored three runners in the inning to even up the score.
In the top of the seventh,
Megan Kesler stepped up to bat first for Piedmont and reached on a single. Her pinch runner was caught out at third on a single by
Abby Atkinson.
MEGAN MCCLAIN RBI singled and advanced to third to score Atkinson, the eventual game-winning run.
Brittney Head pitched a complete game, striking out five and giving up only three earned runs on the day.
The Lady Lions took to the bat early in game 2 with singles by
Megan McClain and
Taylor Morgan to put Piedmont in scoring position.
Kristin Hamby sacrifice-flied to left field to score McClain and Morgan was able to score on an error by the right fielder the next at bat.
In the top of the third, Meredith evened up the score with two runs of their own. The first came by way of a solo shot over the fence for the Avenging Angels followed by an RBI single to bring in a runner from scoring position.
Runs in the bottom of the fifth came thanks to a Hamby RBI single that brought in both McClain and Morgan for the second time today. In the seventh,
Kristin Hamby sacrifice-flied for a second time to score Morgan and McClain in one last time to end the game 6-2. Fresman
Jordin Ellingson got the win in game two after seven innings, giving up two runs and striking out four.
The Lady Lions move to 27-5 overall and 17-3 in the USA South Athletic Conference. They play again tomorrow on the road with a doubleheader against USA South opponent William Peace University before returning home.
