Men's Lacrosse Suffers Close 16-13 Loss In Final Game Of Season At Huntingdon College

Nick Green posted five goals in the Lions 16-13 loss against Huntingdon today.
Box Score Montgomery, AL - Piedmont Men's Lacrosse fell to Huntingdon 16-13 in their final match of the season. The Lions came back in the third after trailing at half but ultimately couldn't convert the necessary shots.

Piedmont took the first lead of the game five minutes into the first period with an unassisted goal by Nick Green. The lead didn't stick though, as the Hawks answered back with three goals of their own in the following two minutes. Green scored a second goal for the Lions seconds later and Piedmont evened out the score with a Spencer Ortis-assisted Nick Leaf goal at the nine minute mark. Unfortunately, Huntingdon put in two more goals with a minute left to take the lead at the end of one period.

Piedmont could not get past the Hawks defense in the second period of play. Several shots on goal were successfully saved and the Hawks put 3 of their own past Piedmont before halftime.

The Lions trailed 8-3 at the start of the third period. They conceded two more early in the period but quickly found motivation for a comeback. Branson Mikell started the scoring off of a Holin Axley assist. Patrick Ammons and Axley followed up with goals of their own just inside the ten minute mark. Paul Belle Isle scored his lone goal of the match to close the gap and Axley scored another to bring it within two. With three minutes to go, Mick Baker made a sharp save. Nick Green took advantage of a counter attack and scored his third goal. With less than a minute to go in the third period, Holin Axley sent a shot just wide of the cage.
Green got the ground ball and slipped it past the Hawk goalie to end the third period even, 10-10.

Spencer Ortis took the lead back for the Lions with the first goal of the fourth period. Nick Green followed up with his fifth goal on a man-up opportunity. Huntingdon had it's own man-up goal two minutes later to keep the score tight. Holin Axley scored the final Piedmont goal unassisted with eight minutes left.

The Hawks would not give in so easily though. They took shot after shot and had success on too many, scoring five in the last seven minutes to pass Piedmont and get the win. Freshman goalkeeper Mick Baker made a number of tough saves to keep the Lions in the contest, he ended the day keeping 14 out of the net.

We were behind five at half and tied 10-10 going into the fourth," Said Head Coach Pete Manderano, impressed with his team's work ethic. "We came up short in our final opportunities but fought hard the whole match and never gave up. The team faced adversity early in the season with key injuries to older players but several young guys stepped up and filled the void well. We're proud of how the boys battled through the season and looking forward to a great group of teammates returning  for the 2014 season." The Lions finished the season with a 6-9 record.
