COLUMBUS, Georgia - In the opening day of the NFCA Leadoff Classis the Piedmont College softball team split a pair of games. In the opener the Lady Lions defeated #17 ranked Ohio Northern University 3-1 and then fell to #25 ranked East Texas Baptist in the finale 1-0.

Against the Polar Bears from ONU the Lady Lions jumped out with a pair of runs in the top of the first to take the only lead of the game. Megan McClain led the game off with a sharp single and scored on a double off the bat of Olivia Duncan who later scored on an error. 

Piedmont would add on a single insurance run in the sixth to extend the margin to 3-0 as Lauren Head would connect with a double plating Duncan. Ohio Northern would scratch a run across in the bottom of the sixth but could not overcome the deficit.

Newcomer Jordan Ellingson picked up her fifth victory in as many starts allowing only five hits while striking out seven.

In the second game against East Texas Baptist University the Lady Lions allowed a single run in the top of the fifth that proved to be the difference. Brittney Head took the tough-luck loss allowing only four hits and one run while striking out six.

PC, now 9-1 overall, will return to action again tomorrow, March 9 as they take on Central College starting at 10:30.
