#11 Piedmont Softball Overpowers Methodist University in DH; 4-1, 8-1

Lady Lions take USA South doubleheader from Methodist University.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fayetteville, NC - The #11 nationally-ranked Piedmont Lady Lions Softball team defeated the Monarchs of Methodist University in a doubleheader today by the scores of 4-1 and 8-1. The Lady Lions outhit the Monarchs 17-10 and committed only two errors on the day.

Game one was the closer of the two for the Lady Lions. Methodist drew first blood with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Piedmont moved forward diligently after the first and the game became a stalemate for several innings. the top of the sixth became Piedmont's turning point on the scoreboard. Abby Atkinson stole third and reached home on a wild throw, first. Several batters later, Kristin Hamby singled to bring Taylor Morgan and Olivia Duncan in. Hamby would finish off the scoring for the inning when she advanced to home after a walk by the Methodist pitcher.

Game one saw Brittney Head retrieve her 11th win of the season, giving up five hits and striking out five.

In the finale, Piedmont swung hard and scored in all but the second and fifth innings. In the first, Taylor Morgan doubled and scored on an RBI single by Kristin Hamby. With runners on first and second in the top of the third, Jaime Dennis RBI singled to score Olivia Duncan from second. Pitcher Jordin Ellingson scored Symone Ball in the top of the fourth on another Piedmont RBI single.

Methodist attlempted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth with a homerun but it was their only run of the game. Hamby doubled in the top of the sixth to score both Olivia Duncan and Megan McClain. The Lady Lions raised the score for the final time in the seventh when McClain sacrifice-flied out to left to score Abby Smith.

Freshman Jordin Ellingson threw a complete game to get her 10th win of the season giving up five hits while striking out seven Monarchs in game two. The Lady Lions move to 23-3 overall and 13-1 in the USA South. They play USA South opponent Greensboro College tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
