Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - Piedmont's Lady Lions softball team continued their winning streak today with a pair of wins in a USA South conference doubleheader over Mary Baldwin College by scores of 8-0 in 5 innings and 10-3.
In a game that ended with 9 hits by the Lady Lions,
Megan McClain started the game out strong with a triple in the bottom of the first.
Olivia Duncan earned an RBI with a groundout two batters later.
The third inning was another chance for the Piedmont lineup to swing the bat.
Laura Carter singled to start off the inning. #Whitney Wolfe singled as well and they both advanced three bases courtesy of a third base fielding error to score Carter. McClain reached base on balls and quickly stole second to give the Lady Lions a better position. It didn't take long as Duncan stepped up to double and bring Wholfe and McClain home. Two quick outs by the Fighting Squirrels brought the inning to an end.
Kristin Hamby led the hitters in the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. Third basemen
Jamie Dennis moved Hamby to third base with a single of her own. The next play saw Hamby score after
JAMIE DENNIS stole second and the Fighting Squirrels couldn't catch either runner. Dennis scored on another throwing error, clearing the bases before freshman Amy Smith tripled. Smith found an opportunity to score on her own when Hogle's pitch bounced past the catcher. The final run of game one came when
Whitney Wolfe doubled to score
Cimberlee Leffler.
The Lady Lions defense had a clean score sheet for the first game save one hit.
Brittney Head's complete game included five strikeouts - Head improves to 11-1 on the season.
Game two of the conference doubleheader saw twenty-two Lady Lions take the field. After a scoreless first, Piedmont picked up the bat and scored four runs off four hits in the bottom of the second starting with a bunt single by
Whitney Wolfe that got Amy Smith to third who reached on an error previously.
Laura Carter singled to score Smith and Wolfe reached home courtesy a sacrifice fly by shortstop
Megan McClain.
Taylor Morgan and #Olivia Duncan both RBI singled to score Carter and Morgan respectively before the inning ended.
The third saw a single run by the Lady Lions before Mary Baldwin put runs on the board in the top of the fourth.
Kasey Headrick came in to pitch for Piedmont along with a number of other fielding changes. After Mary Baldwin loaded the bases and scored one, freshman
Sam Gibson stepped on the mound. The Lady Lions gave up two more runs and kept two on base at the end of the inning but maintained their lead. Going into the bottom of the inning, two hits, including an RBI single by freshman left fielder
Heather Williams, brought Leffler home.
Freshman
Kristina Coggins led the charge in the fifth with a single and reached home thanks to a
Symone Ball RBI bunt single. Several Fighting Squirrel errors led to the final three runs on the Lady Lions scoresheet.
SAMANTHA GIBSON finished the game on the mound to help freshman
Jordan Bennett get her second win of the season.
Taylor Morgan led the offense going 2-2 with an RBI; one of six players to earn an RBI in game two.
The Lady Lions are now on a six game win streak and move to 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the USA South Athletic Conference. Their next competition comes by way of a non-conference doubleheader against Truett-McConnell College Tuesday, March 26th at home.
