Box Score 2 Demorest, Georgia - The Piedmont College softball team extended their winning streak to 4-0 in the USA South Athletic Conference with a pair of victories over North Carolina Wesleyan this afternoon at Walker Field by the scores of 8-0 and 7-6. The Lady Lions hit hard today, with 15 runs in six different innings and 19 hits total.
In the opener, the Lady Lions scored the first runs of the game in the second inning. Singles by
Lauren Head and
Abby Atkinson became two runs after
Megan McClain blasted a single into center field and then advanced to third on throwing errors by the Bishops.
The Lions continued their scoring in the fourth inning by way of a triple and advance on error by
Taylor Morgan. Two hits and an error allowed
Laura Carter, Atkinson, and McClain to load the bases for the senior center fielder to hammer a ball to right-center field. Morgan tripled and scored on a throwing error by the N.C. Wesleyan second basemen to earn her 4 RBI's and improve the lead to 6-0. The fifth saw pinch runner
Symone Ball score from second on a double by L. Head and sophomore
Kristin Hamby drove in the 8-0 mercy rule run in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior
Brittney Head pitched her eigth complete game giving up only seven hits and striking out seven in the victory over the Battling Bishops. McClain with three hits and Atkinson with one led the offense with two runs a piece. McClain batted in two runs while Morgan had three in her fourth inning triple.
The following game in the double header of North Carolina Wesleyan and Piedmont Softball saw the Battling Bishops take a turn in the lead. Four singles earned N.C. Wesleyan 2 runs before the lions could get the last two putouts of the inning. The Lady Lions answered in the bottom of the third with four runs.
Olivia Duncan bunted and reached to score McClain, stole second and scored two batters later.
The lead changed again in the seventh when the Battling Bishops scored four runs in the sixth and seventh. Senior, Megan Kelser doubled to score pinch runners, Ball and
Heather Williams. Atkinson singled and McClain was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs before
TAYLOR MORGAN singled to draw in the winning run.
Freshman
Jordan Bennett was the winning pitcher of record in the finale after Freshman Jordan Ellingson pitched six and two-thirds innings. Ellingson struck out four and gave up 12 hits in the Lady Lions victory. The Lady Lions improve to 14-2 overall and will continue the USA South Athletic Conference weekend with a doubleheader against #12-ranked Christopher Newport University tomorrow. The first game begins at 1:00 pm on the campus of Piedmont College.
