COLUMBUS, Georgia - In the third and final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic the Piedmont College softball team split a pair of games against top-10 nationally ranked teams. In the opener the Lady Lions fell to #4 ranked Emory University 2-1 in eight innings but rebounded to defeat #7 ranked Christopher Newport University by the score of 7-3.
Against in-state rival Emory the Lady Lions scored the first run of the game in fourth inning as
Taylor Morgan drew a walk and later scored. The Eagles would answer in the sixth with a single run which would send the game into extra innings.
Emory would find the winning-run with the international tie-breaker and claim the narrow 2-1 victory. Freshman Jordan Ellingson took the hard-luck loss going eight innings allowing only three hits.
In the finale the Lady Lions never trailed and posted single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 advantage. After three runs in the fourth the Captains would answer with a pair in the fifth cutting the margin to 5-2. PC would answer with two runs of their own in the home half to regain command.
Brittney Head went the distance for the victory striking out five while scattering nine hits.
Abby Atkinson led the offense scoring three runs while
Megan McClain added a perfect 2-2 day with two walks and two runs scored.
The Lady Lions finish the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a record of 4-2, including three wins over Top-25 teams, and a third place finish in the Silver Bracket. PC, now 12-2 overall, will return to action again on Saturday, March 16 as they host USA South Conference foe North Carolina Wesleyan College in a double header starting at 1:00.
