ATLANTA, Georgia -- The Piedmont men's lacrosse team made a late run to spoil Oglethorpe's season opener in Atlanta Wednesday night, 6-3.  Piedmont was able to control the flow of the contest despite a tough Petrels defense that forced 15 Lions turnovers.

Piedmont held a 1-0 lead at halftime by virtue of a NICK GREEN goal that occurred with 13:05 left in the first quarter. In the second half, the Petrels tied the game on an Arness Holsey goal with 12:35 left in the third quarter, but Piedmont would respond with a HOLIN AXLEY goal at the 10:07 mark to gain the lead once again (2-1).  Oglethorpe's would score again late in the third to tie the contest at two all going into the final quarter.

The first five minutes of the fourth quarter were competitive, with both teams taking shots on goal, but it was Piedmont that struck first in the final period to take a 3-2 lead.  A stingy Piedmont defense would allow just one goal the rest of the game.  Piedmont took the lead with 6:30 remaining and never looked back.  The Lions lacrosse squad scored twice more in the final minutes to seal the victory.

NICK GREEN led the Piedmont scoring attack with two goals on four shots.  Also scoring goals for the Lions were HOLIN AXLEY, Spencer Ortiz and DALE MORLEY

Leading the Petrels was Arness Holsey, who scored all three Petrel goals on nine shots.
The Lions outshot the Petrels 26-22, and committed five less turnovers than the host team (15-20).  Oglethorpe however, did come up with more ground balls than Piedmont, 32-26.

Piedmont (3-0) will play their 2013 home-opener against Guilford College this Saturday at 3:00 PM.
