Softball Opens 2013 Season with Wins at Berry 3-2 and 6-4

ROME, Georgia -- The Piedmont College softball team opened the 2013 season with a doubleheader sweep of non-conference host Berry College this afternoon by the scores of 3-2 and 6-4. The Lady Lions used a pair of complete game efforts on the mound and clutch hitting to take the victories.

In the opener the Lady Lions jumped out with three runs on four hits in the fourth. KRISTIN HAMBY drilled a single into centerfield plating two runs and later scored on a LAUREN HEAD RBI-single. Berry would answer with a single run in the fourth and one in the sixth but could not overcome the deficit.

BRITTNEY HEAD went the distance allowing a pair of runs while scattering five hits and striking out a pair. Hamby led the offense going 2-3 with a pair of RBI's while five teammates all chipped-in with single hits.

In the finale Piedmont opened with a single run as Hamby again posted an RBI with a groundout to second scoring MEGAN MCCLAIN who led off with a double. The Vikings would knot the score at 1-1 with a single run in the second and take the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth frame.

After two scoreless innings the Lady Lions would explode with five runs on four hits in the seventh highlighted by a Jordan Ellingson three-run blast over the centerfield wall. Despite Berry posting a single run in the seventh the Lady Lions completed the come from behind victory.

In addition to her game-winning homerun Ellingson went the distance on the mound striking out three for her first career victory. The Lady Lions, now 2-0 overall, will return to action again on Wednesday, February 20 as they play host to Elmira College in a doubleheader starting at 12:00.
