Maryville, TN - The Lady Lions cruised past the Salem Spirits 10-1 in their Great South Athletic Conference tournament opener, using
Brittney Head's strong pitching and
Taylor Morgan's hot bat. Despite some teams being forced to play a pair of the games in the tournament's first day, no one has yet been ousted. Piedmont entered as the #2 seed and proved why from the get go.
Piedmont played perfect defense behind the sophomore Head, who held the opposition to just four hits while tossing a complete game win. The offense was helped by three Salem errors, as the Lady Lions scored 10 runs on nine hits. The junior Morgan led the way with a 3-for-3 game at the plate, driving in two runs while scoring three, adding a double in the win.
PC scored three in the first and three in the second to take an immediate 6-0 lead, and capped the game with a four-run fourth in the five-inning contest. Sophomore
Lauren Head drove in two runs as well in the victory, while junior
Jamie Dennis added a triple. Piedmont moves on to play tomorrow at 1:00 pm against Huntingdon, and will play a second game of the day at 5:00 pm only if they fail to win against the Lady Hawks. A win ensures they won't play until Sunday. Piedmont is now 22-13 overall.
