Lions Drop Season Finale In Road Loss To Berry

Patrick Ammons (21) scored a team-best two goals in the Lions' 16-6 loss at Berry College in the season finale. The men finished their inaugural season 5-7 overall. Spencer Ortis (4) scored 32 goals in 2012 to lead the Lions, adding five assists.

Rome, GA - Piedmont dropped a 16-6 decision on the road in a season-ending loss at Berry College Saturday afternoon.  The men fell behind 4-0 after the first quarter, and were trailing 7-2 at the half.  The Lions' scoring came by way of two goals in each of the second, third and fourth periods.

The host Vikings were up 5-0 until Piedmont notched its first goal with 7:39 to go in the second quarter on a goal by Spencer Ortis, assisted by John Sumner Gantz.  Steve Blanchard added a late goal just before the break, but the deficit stood at 7-2.  Two goals coming out of intermission made it 9-2 befor Gantz' goal at the 10:10 mark in the third.  Playing with a man up a bit later, Patrick Ammons scored on an assist by Max Rowse bridging the gap to 10-4.

However, the Vikings scored six unanswered goals to take a defining 16-4 lead, but the Lions ended the season on a high note with two goals in the final 25 seconds.  Rowse scored on a pass from Blanchard before the final goal of the year by Ammons from Gantz with six seconds to go.

Gantz finished with a goal and two assists, while Ammons had two goals.  Blanchard and Rowse tallied a goal and assist apiece.  The Lions finished their inaugural season with a 5-7 record overall.  Ortis led Piedmont in scoring in 2012 with 32 goals, adding five assists.  Blanchard had 28 goals and Rowse 26 for the year, while Blanchard led the team with 22 assists.
