Winston-Salem, NC - The Lady Lions traveled to Salem College for a Great South Athletic Conference double header and took a pair of wins that were as different as night and day; a 3-0 shutout win in the opener and a 13-1 offensive display in the second.  Sophomore Brittney Head tossed a complete game gem while the offense backed her with a three-run third, accounting for all of the support.  The second game featured homeruns from senior Emily Cheek and freshman Whitney Wolfe, while the pitching again was sharp.

With the bases full and just one out in the third, junior Taylor Morgan drew an RBI walk before classmate Megan McClain singled in a pair with two outs.  The offense threatened only once more, in the sixth with a runner on third, but Head wouldn't need any more support.  The starter went the distance for the win in the circle, allowing just three hits and two walks while holding the Spirits to no runs and striking out an incredible 16 hitters.  She struck out the side in four of the seven frames.  Freshman Symone Ball had two of the Lady Lions' six hits, while Morgan added a pair of stolen bases.

The second game saw the Piedmont offense explode in the first three stanzas, beginning with a solo run in the first, six in the second and four in the third.  Two more in the fifth and final frame rounded out the scoring.  McClain, sophomore Lauren Head and freshman Haley Peeples had two hits each as the lineup combined for 13 hits and 13 runs, way more than enough for BRITTNEY HEAD as she tossed another complete game, picking up her second win of the night, allowing seven hits on no walks, and fanning five more Spirits.  Cheek tallied five RBI in the game, while Wolfe had three.

Cheek came through with an RBI groundout in her first plate appearance, but it was the second inning that contained all the power.  Wolfe stepped into the box with one out but three runners on and delivered a crushing three-run homer to up the lead to 4-0.  After a single and walk followed, Cheek mirrored Wolfe with her own three-run bomb, promptly making it 7-0 Lady Lions.  Her fifth RBI came the next frame when she reached on an error with a runner on third.  Peeples, Ball and Morgan all plated runs in the inning, increasing the padding to 11-0.  A single run in the home half of the fourth was all Salem could muster before the visitors struck again for two more for good measure.

Head moves to 12-3 overall in the circle, while Cheek's homer was her fourth of the year.  Wolfe's huge blast was her first collegiate homerun.  The Lady Lions are now 16-8 overall and 9-1 in GSAC games.  They have won seven of the last eight contests and four in a row.  The women will play again Saturday at home against Wesleyan College in a GSAC double header, beginning at 1:00 pm.
