Atlanta, GA - The Lady Lions smashed Spelman in a Great South Athletic Conference double header, taking a 17-1 dominating game one win into the nightcap, where the blistering offense came out with a 22-2 win, sweeping a twin bill on the road Tuesday night. Piedmont has now won five of the last six games, and eight of the last 10. The Lady Lions had only powered up for double digits once this season, as both of these outputs were season-highs.
Game one lasted just five innings, as the visitors scored in every frame, highlighted by an eight-run third inning. The women used 16 hits to bring across 17 runs, while sophomore
Brittney Head picked up a win in the circle after going three innings, striking out nine to just two hits. Six extra-base hits powered the offensive onslaught for the Lady Lions. Freshman
Haley Peeples, junior
Taylor Morgan, sophomore
Amanda Posey and freshman
Madison Eubanks all tallied two hits each. For Eubanks, the hits were her first of her collegiate career. Sophomore
Courtney Clark had just one hit in the opening win, but plated four runs in the effort, adding a double. Head and freshman
Kristin Hamby had two RBI apiece as well.
The offense didn't slow down heading into the nightcap; instead, it went the other direction, overpowering the Jaguars by 20 runs in a 22-2 victory. Another 16-hit output this time produced more runs, as sophomore
Megan Studdard pitched a brilliant game, a four-hitter as part of a complete game win. Her only mistake was one pitch that resulted in both of Spelman's runs, a two-run shot in the first inning that gave the home team a quick but short-lived lead after a single digit for the Lady Lions to begin the game. The eight-run second frame by the women was impressive, but it was a 10-run outburst in the third that really pushed the Lady Lions to another five-inning win.
Hamby had three hits to lead the attack, including a double and two RBI, while senior
Emily Cheek posted a pair of hits that brought in four runs, mostly off her two doubles. Posey added two hits herself in the win. Posey was electric on the bases as well, swiping five bags. Studdard struck out eight in her first win of the season. Meanwhile, Head collected her 10th win of the 2012 campaign in the opener. The wins move the Lady Lions to 14-8 on the year and to a 7-1 mark in GSAC action. The women return to action at home with a pair against visiting GSAC-foes Wesleyan College Thursday at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
