NEED TO KNOW:
Game 1 Score: Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 0
Game 2 Score: Piedmont 4, LaGrange 2
Record: Piedmont, 25-18
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a long day two of the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament, Piedmont softball held off LaGrange to avoid elimination after falling at the hands of top-seeded Huntingdon in the first game of the day.
Game 1: Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 0
Piedmont saw its offense stifled in game one of the day, as Huntingdon starting pitcher Allie Roberts showcased why she was named CCS Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday with a scoreless four inning outing to earn the win.
Although she gave way to Madisyn Fruge for the final three frames, the duo combined to allow just three Piedmont base hits.
The Lions threatened with a
Megan Steinmeyer leadoff double followed by a walk in the second, but Roberts worked her way out of trouble.
Huntingdon was able to break the scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the third inning before adding on another in the fifth to lead 3-0.Â
Leadoff hitter
Maddi Spieks recorded two of Piedmont's three hits for the game.
Game 2: Piedmont 4, LaGrange 2
With inclement weather causing a delay for game two, the Lions and Panthers saw their elimination game finish under the lights.
Â
Serving as the visiting team, the Lions wasted no time taking the pressure off with a three-run second inning and another run in the third.
Steinmeyer continued her hot hitting, leading off the second with a single before the Lions eventually loaded the bases.
Â
That set the stage for
Kennedy Votava to drive home the game's first run. After the dust settled, Piedmont added two more runs, the last of which came from outstanding baserunning on a double steal, first and third situation.
Mandi Peretti then led off with her second hit of the game in the third inning and came in to score on an RBI ground out by
Jasmine Lowery.
This was more than enough for Steinmeyer, who held the Panthers off the scoreboard until the final frame. Although LaGrange threatened in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate, Steinmeyer escaped the jam to end the game and keep Piedmont's season alive.
Up next, the Lions will take on the winner of the final game of the day on Friday between Asbury and Maryville. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. (ET).
TURNING POINT:
- In all three games for Piedmont in the tournament, the team that has scored first has won.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Steinmeyer delivered another outstanding performance in the circle, shutting down LaGrange to earn the win in Piedmont's second game of the day.
- She also was strong at the plate, recording three hits over the two games, including two in the finale vs. LaGrange.
