Birmingham, AL - A 4-0 deficit at the end of one quarter didn't unravel Piedmont, but a seven-goal period in the second gave Birmingham-Southern an insurmountable lead in a 25-3 win over the Lions. The visitors accounted for only six shots on goal in the entire first quarter and midway through the third, with the lone goal coming from
Max Rowse off a
Spencer Ortis pass. The goal gave Rowse 11 on the season.
The Panthers found two quick goals in the opening period, scoring in the first three minutes before notching a third goal near the midway point. The fourth goal was made with 1:42 remaining in the first, as Piedmont had only attempted two shots going into the second. They doubled the output in the the next period, starting with Rowse's goal. However, the host team added a statement goal just 35 seconds later as part of 11 unanswered goals. Two of those goals in the second quarter came within six seconds of each other. The Lions finally retaliated with 8:20 left in the third period on an unassisted goal by
Nicholas Green, his team-leading 13th of the year.
Nearly two minutes later the host team scored its third man-up goal to pull ahead 16-2, and was up 20-2 going into the final period. Rowse added his second goal of the night and 12th of the season in the fourth at the 7:24 mark, but wound up losing 25-3 when the final horn sounded. Piedmont, after its second straight loss, sits at 2-3 on the season. The men return to action Saturday at 1:00 pm at home against Millsaps College.
