Piedmont Evens Record With Blowout Win Over Millsaps

Spencer Ortis came up with five goals in Piedmont's 21-6 win over visiting Millsaps College at home Saturday afternoon. All of his goals came in the opening half, which saw the Lions go up 11-2 while cruising to the blowout win.

Demorest, GA - The Lions lacrosse team came out firing on all cylinders, using a plethora of scorers en route to a 21-6 win over visiting Millsaps College Saturday afternoon.  Piedmont scored five unanswered goals in the first period and took an 11-2 halftime break.  Seven third quarter goals assured the Lions of their third win of the season, evening their overall mark at 3-3.

Spencer Ortis led the attack with five goals on the game, while Steve Blanchard added four goals and a pair of assists in the win.  Ortis was the first to score on an unassisted goal four minutes into action, then added his second score moments later on a pass from Nicholas GreenJohn Sumner Gantz fired in a pair of goals before the first quarter ended as Piedmont went up 5-0.

Ortis' third goal got things started less than a minute into the second quarter was followed by goals by Graham Parks Ellison III and Patrick Ammons.  Down 8-0, the visiting Majors finally notched a goal with 9:28 to go in the half.  However, Ortis struck again with his fourth goal to re-take the 8-goal lead.  His fifth and last goal came near the end of the half on an assist from Green as PC was playing a man up.

The 11-2 halftime lead was expanded to 12-2 just seconds into the second half when Green scored an unassisted goal.  Piedmont tallied six more goals to close the period up 18-4, with Blanchard scoring twice more and Ellison racking up his second score.  Millsaps found a goal with 18 seconds left in the period, then struck first in the final quarter to bridge the gap to 18-5.  Piedmont scored three more for good measure to take the decisive 21-6 win.

Gantz was effective on face-offs, winning 13 of 17 while also collecting six ground balls to go with his two goals.  Green and Ammons tallied three goals each, while Max Rowse and Ellison had a pair apiece.  The Lions return to the field Wednesday at 3:30 pm when playing host to Oglethorpe University.
